Kenya's tourism sector is set for significant expansion following the unveiling of nine regional tourism circuits under the Tembea Kenya initiative. This move marks a strategic effort by the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife to reimagine the country's tourism landscape, showcasing hidden gems to attract both domestic and international travelers.

During the launch event in Kisumu County, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, highlighted the importance of these circuits in revitalizing Kenya’s tourism industry. She emphasized that the circuits are designed to meet current travel demands and trends while aligning with conservation goals.

“These new circuits offer a holistic and immersive experience, taking visitors on a journey through Kenya's rich and diverse attractions. We've incorporated emerging niches such as adventure tourism, sports, cultural experiences, eco-tourism, wellness tourism, and more. Each region has its own unique appeal, and we encourage travelers to explore the full breadth of experiences Kenya has to offer,” said CS Miano.

The Ministry is also set to roll out targeted marketing campaigns to popularize these circuits as part of the broader Tembea Kenya agenda, which remains a flagship program to promote domestic tourism. CS Miano encouraged Kenyans to showcase the beauty of their regions through photography, announcing an upcoming photo contest to celebrate the launch.

Appreciating Kisumu County's role in hosting the Kenya Tourism Week celebrations—culminating in World Tourism Day—Miano praised the region’s contributions to tourism, which include visits to local attractions such as Ndeere Island and tree-planting initiatives at Kajulu Hills. The celebrations also featured youth-driven activities such as street art exhibitions, fashion shows, and a hackathon showcasing innovative solutions for the tourism sector.

Narok County Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, who chairs the Council of Governors’ Tourism and Wildlife Committee, stressed the need for increased government investment in tourism. “If well harnessed, tourism could become the largest contributor to GDP and a key source of employment for the youth—one of the government’s primary agendas,” he said. Governor Ntutu expressed full support for marketing the circuits, emphasizing that tourism should be prioritized at both the national and county levels to unlock its vast potential.

As the chief guest of the evening, Governor Ntutu also applauded the tourism sector and the active involvement of young people in anchoring tourism as a key economic driver. The evening saw several awards recognizing excellence in tourism, including categories such as Start-up Company of the Year, Conservation Champion of the Year, Travel Content Creator of the Year, Peace Advocate, and Community Impact Award. The youth-organized hackathon even unveiled a tech-based solution for conference packaging.

Principal Secretary for Tourism, John Ololtuaa, echoed the sentiments of enhanced collaboration between the Ministry and counties, stating that the circuits will help address existing gaps and promote growth across Kenya's diverse regions. “This strategy allows us to work more closely with counties, enhancing destination competitiveness. We aim to increase bed nights, length of stay, repeat visits, and overall visitor satisfaction,” Ololtuaa noted.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO June Chepkemei also emphasized that the KTB will aggressively market these circuits to showcase Kenya's vast array of attractions, ensuring that tourism opportunities are spread across all 47 counties. She stressed that these efforts would drive inclusive growth and position Kenya as a must-visit global destination.

The nine newly unveiled circuits cover all regions of the country and include: the Nairobi Circuit, Central Kenya Circuit, Coastal Circuit, Northern Circuit, Western Circuit, Southern Circuit, North Rift Circuit, South Rift Circuit, and Eastern Circuit. Each circuit highlights the most iconic attractions in its respective region, supporting the Ministry’s efforts to diversify Kenya's tourism offering and enhance the overall visitor experience.
